A common play theme that appears throughout the world with all children is the mud kitchen, and The Wild Woods is no exception. Today during our hike, the AM class gathered berries along the way to cook with. When we returned to the pavilion area the children created a berry bakery and began cooking. Berry cakes, berry pies, and more.
This baking activity was a wonderful example of the children showing their ability to engage in cooperative play. During the first two weeks we saw a lot of parallel play, where kids work on similar things by one another but are not actually working with one another. This baking activity is a great for the children to how to work and negotiate the structure of cooperative play. For our AM class the transition from parallel to cooperative play will be one of the biggest things we be fostering and looking forward to watching throughout the year!
